Sam Thomas was born into and brought up in a missionary family in India. As an eight-year-old boy, he accepted Christ at a Vacation Bible School hosted at his father’s church. He graduated Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, and returned to India to intern with his father for three years.

Sam’s father, Dr. K. C. Thomas, founded the Independent Baptist Ministries of India in 1968. After Dr. Thomas’ death in 1994, Sam continued working alongside his brother Paul with Independent Baptist Ministries of India. Since 1994, the ministry has established one Bible college and 3 institutes that have trained and sent out national pastors who have started more than 27 churches in India. This brings the total of churches started since the ministry's inception in 1968 to 107. Brother Thomas continues to strive to fulfill the original goal of Independent Baptist Ministries of India– to reach the unreached with the Gospel of Christ.
